How to Care for Your Diamond Jewelry

Here at Zillion, we’re quite fond of diamonds. We’ve even authored blog posts on the history behind their formation, cultivation, cutting and wearing — along with their starring roles in film, music and even professional sports.

So, yes, we love diamonds. And we love providing you with affordable, reliable, easy-to-use insurance policies for all your beloved diamond jewelry pieces.

One thing we’ve yet to touch on here at our blog is how to properly care for your diamond jewelry — until now.

Since we’ve all become quite adept at staying safe and productive at home, let’s take a closer look on how to make sure our treasured diamond jewelry does the same.

Safe at Home

Clean Breaks

Believe it or not, there’s quite a bit you can do at home to take good care of your diamond ring, necklace, bracelet or other jewelry piece. It starts with simple cleaning that you can – and honestly, really should – do daily. At the end of the day, you can rub it against a soft cloth (chamois or flannel work well) to keep it sparkling and free of potentially harmful lotions, dirt and skin oils. Less frequent, maybe monthly cleanings can consist of soaking it in a mixture of warm water and dishwashing liquid — then using a soft toothbrush to scrub it clean (focusing especially on the back of your diamond). If you want to mix in weekly or bi-weekly soaking sessions, you can let it sit in a mixture of soap and cold water for half an hour or so, then let it air dry.

Time Alone

Let’s face it, diamonds are special. And as such, they’re not really meant to mingle too closely with more “common” jewelry pieces — or everyday substances. By storing your diamond jewelry away from other jewelry (perhaps even in a fabric-lined jewelry case or special pouch), you’ll help avoid unsightly scratches. By doing your best to never leave it lying around on a bathroom countertop or shelf, you’ll help avoid contact with chemicals found in things like perfume, hairspray, deodorant and air freshener. These substances will dull your diamond’s sheen and brilliance — but only if you let them. So will exposure to excess sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Handle with Care

When handling diamonds, it’s best to always be careful, and even gentle. You’ll also want to make sure to remove any diamond jewelry when doing “dirty work” such as gardening, cleaning, home renovation or the like. And as we touched on above, if you’re going out in harsh elements that include extreme sunshine and/or temperatures, it’s best to be extra careful with your precious diamond jewelry. Oh, and keep it out of the shower and away from the sink, too.

In-Store Care

Of course, sometimes it’s best to entrust a professional with a job. The same can be said when it comes to cleaning your diamond jewelry. Here are a few helpful tips on turning to the pros to deliver an extra level of care and cleaning.

Professional Cleaning and Polish

Of course, it’s still wise to take every precaution possible as we all continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic together. But if and when the jeweler you purchased your precious piece or pieces is open again (and always following safety guidelines), you might want to consider making a trip there to experience a higher level of diamond cleaning and polishing. Many jewelers offer professional cleaning services for diamonds purchased from them — often including specialized steam cleaners. He or she may also offer to polish your diamond jewelry for you — typically done using another specialized instrument such as a high-speed polishing wheel. Simply put, these are the kind of tools you just can’t use yourself at home. The end result will be a diamond jewelry piece that’s void of scratches and scuffs — and shinier and more brilliant than it’s been in quite some time. And who doesn’t love that?
